Scene One

The Island

A desert island – palm trees, sun in the sky, a castle with a tower, where the King and Queen stand holding a baby. Narrator 1 is a Girl, Narrator 2 a Boy.

Narrator 1

Once upon a time…

Narrator 2

Oh here we go!

Narrator 1

What?

Narrator 2

It’s going to be one of those boring fairy tales, isn’t it?

Narrator 1

No.

Narrator 2

Prove it!

Narrator 1

Can you do any better?

Narrator 2

Yes. Once upon a time there was a desert island with palm trees….

Narrator 1

And a castle with a tower where a beautiful princess lived.

Narrator 2

I knew it!

Narrator 1

The king and queen loved her very much.

Action switches to the King and Queen.

Queen

You know, I love our little princess very much.

King

I was just going to say the same thing.

Queen

But what shall we call her?

King

She is so precious.

Queen

Our little treasure.

King

That is it! That is what we will call her! Treasure!

Narrator 2

You can’t call a princess Treasure!

Narr 1
/King /Queen

Why not?

Narrator 2

(holds up hands) Okay.

Music no. 1: Song – Where The Palm Trees Grow

Narrators 1&2 exit. Some Native Dancers in grass skirts, etc, could accompany the song.

Chorus

Come come with me to my island by the sea
Where the palm trees grow,
Sun in the sky, there’s not a cloud in sight
Where the palm trees grow.

And we’ll have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
Where the palm trees grow,
And we’ll have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
Where the palm trees grow.

Come, come with me to the castle by the sea
Where the palm trees grow,
Such an odd sight, what a strange thing to find
Where the palm trees grow,

And see the King, the King and Queen
Where the palm trees grow,
And see the lovely princess Treasure
Where the palm trees grow.

A desert island, with a King and Queen and a Castle.
Bright sun, golden sand, with a view by the sea and that’s all.
A desert island, with a princess known as Treasure,
Not much to do though, and that’s where the trouble began.

And we’ll have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
Where the palm trees grow,
And we’ll have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun
Where the palm trees grow.

A desert island, with a King and Queen and a Castle.
Bright sun, golden sand, with a view by the sea and that’s all.
A desert island, with a princess known as Treasure,
Not much to do though, and that’s where the trouble began.

Where the palm trees grow.
Where the palm trees grow.
Where the palm trees grow.
Where the palm trees grow.

Music finishes.

Scene Two

The Castle

The tower on the island. Narrators 3&4 come to position. Treasure takes her place on the tower, with the King and Queen near her.

Narrator 3

The princess Treasure grew up to be beautiful.

Narrator 4

She had everything that she needed, except one thing.

Narrator 3

She had no-one to play with, for no-one else lived on the island.

Narrator 4

Hold on – I just saw all those dancers!

Narrator 3

They’re only part-time.

Narrator 4

Oh.

Narrator 3

So, the Princess Treasure didn’t have any friends.

Narrator 4

Everyone go ‘aaah’.

Audience

Aaah.

Narrators 3 & 4 exit. The action switches to the King, Queen and Treasure.

King

What shall we do?

Queen

Our little Treasure is so lonely.

King

She stays in her tower all day.

Music no. 2 – Treasure’s Lament

Treasure

(sadly) What can I do?
When there’s nothing to do,
When there’s no one to play with at all?
It’s lonely, it’s sad,
Building castles in sand,
And the sea is just making me blue.

Treasure wanders lonely around the island during the instrumental.

Can I just have one day
Where friends come to play?
Can I just have one day like that?
Only one day of fun
Where there’s more than just one.
And there’s no reason to feel so sad.

She acts out the verse.

Here’s what to do,
I will try something new,
Write a message to bring them to me,
‘Help won’t you come
And be friends with me’
Signed ‘Treasure’ and sent out to sea.

Chorus

In a bottle that’s corked,
And a plan that’s well thought,
Treasure’s sending her heart to the world.
Pray that someone will hear,
Pray that they will come here,
To be Treasured friends of this girl.

As the music finishes, Narrators 5 & 6 come to position.

Narrator 5

A message in a bottle?

Narrator 6

What else could she do?

Narrator 5

What about a text message?

Narrator 6

No coverage.

Narrator 5

An e-mail?

Narrator 6

No broadband.

Narrator 5

Well in that case, I guess all she could do was…

Narrator 6

Send a message in a bottle?

Narrator 5

Yes.

Narrator 6

Luckily, the mermaids who lived around the island felt sorry for the Princess. They took her message and carried it far out to sea.

Narrators 5 & 6 exit.

Music no.3 – Mermaid Ballet

Scene Three

The Ocean

The castle set could be concealed using blue fabrics to simulate waves. Narrators 7 & 8 come to position.

Narrator 7

Now it just so happened that there were a band of Pirates nearby.

Narrator 8

Which one played the lead guitar?

Narrator 7

What?

Narrator 8

In the band.

Narrator 7

I’m not even answering that. Watch out, here they come.

The Pirates enter, carrying their’ship’ as the music begins.

Music no. 4 – Pirate Song

Pirates

We’re
Pirates, pirates, strong, smart and fearless, sing me mates ‘Yo ho!’
Pirates, pirates, see, here’s our cutlass, watch out how you go!
Pirates, pirates, plank-walking pirates, on the seven seas!
Pirates, pirates, treasure-loving pirates, hard to starboard please!

Pirates

We’re not like a dentist, who says ‘please go aah’

Chorus

‘aargh’

Pirates

We not like policemen ‘ello, ‘ello, ‘ello

Chorus

‘what’s all this then?’

Pirates

We’re not like a cowboy, who shouts out ‘yee-hah!’
Just look for the flag, then you’ll know who we are
We’re pirates, pirates, strong, smart and fearless, sing me mates ‘Yo ho!’
Pirates, pirates, see, here’s our cutlass, watch out how you go!
Pirates, pirates, plank-walking pirates, on the seven seas!
Pirates, pirates, treasure-loving pirates, hard to starboard please!
We’re not like a postman, who whistles as he walks

Chorus

(whistle)

Pirates

We’re not like air-traffic control

Chorus

(pinch nose) ‘Delta, foxtrot cleared for landing’

Pirates

We’re not like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (‘heigh ho’)
Just look for the flag, then you’ll know who we are –

Chorus

They’re
Pirates, pirates, strong, smart and fearless, sing me mates ‘Yo ho!’
Pirates, pirates, see, here’s our cutlass, watch out how you go!
Pirates, pirates, plank-walking pirates, on the seven seas!
Pirates, pirates, treasure-loving pirates, hard to starboard please!
Pirates, pirates, treasure-loving pirates, sing me mates ‘Yo ho!’

Music finishes.

Narrator 7

So, the pirates were busy minding their own business when suddenly the first mate saw the bottle.

First mate

I can see a bottle!

Narrator 8

So they decided to drop a net and bring it on board.

Pirate 1

Let’s drop a net and bring it on board.

Narrator 7

And then they took it to the Captain, a fierce man called Black Patch Jack!

Pirate 2

Let’s take it to the Captain…(pause)

Narrator 8

Well, where’s the rest?

Pirate 2

Oh, yeah. Let’s take it to the Captain, he’s a fierce man called Black Patch Jack!

Narrator 7

They wanted to know why…oh look, there’s no point in us both saying it. Let’s go.

Narrators 7 & 8 exit.

Pirate 3

Why did you tell us his name?

Pirate 4

No-one says that name and lives to tell the tale.

Pirate 2

I wasn’t telling tales, his name is Black Patch Jack.

First mate

Aarh, will you stop that! Captain?

Patch comes over.

Patch

Ahoy!

First mate

We’ve got a bottle.

Patch

It’s no use without glasses.

First mate

Aye. But it has a message inside.

They pull out the message.

Pirate 4

(reads) ‘Help, won’t you come and be friends with me - Treasure.’

Pirates

Treasure!

First mate

It’s a treasure map!

Patch

Aye, that it is. Let us go and get it then. Hoist the sail!

Pirates

Aye, aye Captain!

Music 4a: Pirate song reprise

Pirates

We’re
Pirates, pirates, strong, smart and fearless, sing me mates ‘Yo ho!’
Pirates, pirates, see, here’s our cutlass, watch out how you go!

Pirates sail off into the sunset.
